5-9 ONLINE PRESENCE

This video lays out how build a community by being a comfort creator instead of content creator:

Rather than my usual analysis of breaking down why the video performed well, I actually wanted to reference the content of the video and how we can use the advice to build a brand that makes people feel better.

People remember how you make them feel. By creating uplifting, soothing, or inspiring content, you become a consistent, positive presence in your audience’s life, which makes them more likely to return. Safe spaces = community. Especially when the world is full of negativity and we’re flooded with content about everything going wrong in the world, and everything that’s wrong about our life.

How you can implement this:

  • Avoiding fear-based messaging: This is the part that stuck with me the most. When you make educational content is really easy to slip into messaging based on “do X so you don’t why” - which is essentially fear-based. But I do think it can go a long way to move towards “do X because you’re Y” or “ do X so that Y” - more based on aspirations, encouragement and shifting perspectives in a soothing way. I recommend watching the full video for some ideas of a signature series you can create that’s unique to your audience.

5-9 PRODUCTIVITY

A ChatGPT prompt to find your “dream job”

Try this prompt if you feel like you’re stumped on what to pursue as a career or that there’s no career path that fits your specific needs and interests:

I want you to act like a career coach that has knowledge on a variety of roles, industries and career types - both traditional and non-traditional. Right now I am a [insert role and employment type]. I enjoy [insert likes about your role] and I don’t like [insert dislikes about the role]. The most important thing for my next career move to be is [value 1] [value 2] [value 3]. What are some suggestions for my next move?”

An example:

“I want you to act as a career coach that has knowledge on a variety of industries, roles and career types - both traditional and non traditional. Right now I am a freelance copywriter for e-commerce companies. I enjoy writing and the fact that I get to work with a variety of companies and don’t like that I work by myself and it has no leadership opportunities. The most important things for my next career move are for it to be creative, remote, and has managerial responsibilities. What are some suggestions for my next move?.”

5-9 FINANCES

Two types of “emergency fund”

The premise of this newsletter - and building in your 5-9 - is to create a life where you’re not at the mercy of one company. It’s no secret that finances play a big part in this. One strategy that’s made a big difference for me as I moved into more unpredictable work like freelancing and contracting, is having two types of “emergency” fund:

  1. Comfy fund - this is your financial cushion for those unexpected life-doing-what-life-does kind of expenses - a leaky roof, the car that needs a new tyre, the family emergency. The amount you need depends on your lifestyle and the type of unexpected expenses you tend to face, but aiming for an amount between £1-£5k is a good starting point.

Tip: Keep this in the highest-yielding, immediate access savings account you can find so it’s available when you need it and can still be growing when you don’t.

  2. A peace of mind fund - Aim to save 3-6 months of your current monthly take-home pay. By having this, you know you’re covered if you ever lose your income or have to take extended time off work. Knowing you’re covered gives you the confidence to pursue opportunities without fear of financial instability.

Tip: Keep this fund in a savings account that balances accessibility with a solid interest rate.

If any of these accounts dip below its target level, I pause other financial priorities on pause to replenish them. That’s how I stay ahead of life’s curveballs.

To end this edition, here’s something to reflect on: Do you feel more safety when there’s a process? Are you trying to create or find a process when you know deep down there’s a core action you need to take and get consistent in and that is the process? This might be a form of procrastination and I think the world of self-help has made this more prevalent. Sometimes it really is as simple as giving it a go, seeing the result and iterating from there. Finding extra steps to do, or the perfect formula is probably delaying your dream life.

That’s a wrap! See you Wednesday after the next.

— Peace ✌🏾
