CONTENT DECODER

This video is an example of how your video idea can spark conversation which increases shares:

Background info:

  • Creator: Me :)

  • Content type - “Controversial conversation starter”

  • Views & engagement at time of writing - Tiktok: 62k views, 7k likes and 530 shares

Why the video works:

  • The topic: Let’s be real - controversy is gold on social media, but actually tapping into it is way easier said than done, especially if you're more on the introverted side or already feel a bit nervous about putting yourself out there. The idea of saying something that might ruffle feathers can feel pretty intimidating!

I decided to dive into a problem I've personally dealt with - knowing it’s a bit taboo, rarely discussed, yet very relatable. My goal was to approach it in a non-judgmental and solution-oriented way. These kinds of topics are conversation starters, the type people end up chatting about with friends via DM, which naturally boosts reach and visibility.

One big takeaway on my content journey? The right topic can carry a video like nothing else - yep, even more than the script, editing, or visuals. A strong, relatable topic does half the work by pulling in viewers who feel genuinely seen by the content.

How you can implement this:

  • Find the “taboo” in your niche: Think about those topics in your field that people kinda know but don’t really talk about - stuff everyone’s feeling but maybe feels too awkward to bring up. When you tackle these in a non-judgy way, it gets people talking, sharing, and actually engaging with your stuff.

QUICK WIN HACK

A ChatGPT prompt for unique video ideas

Try this prompt when you’re stumped on video ideas:

Act like a marketing expert that specialises in customer research.

Identify 10 frustrations, 10 wants, 10 fears and 10 goals which are commonly experienced by people who do (ACTIVITY PEOPLE IN YOUR TARGET MARKET DO).

Format your response in a table.”

You can then ask chatGPT to use these results to come up with fresh content ideas:

“Based on the ideas listed above, come up with 40 social media content ideas to target my audience's emotions.”

I’m thinking about adding a new section to this newsletter: an anonymous breakdown from people who are building cool things to diversify their income outside their 9-5. Would this be something you’re interested in? If so, what would you like to know from them that would be most useful? I’d love to create a repeatable format. Thanks for everyone who’s already got back to me on this - if you haven’t yet and have some thought, please reply to this and let me knows !

That’s a wrap! See you next Wednesday.
